KEEP REGGAE MUSIC ALIVE The flagship of Reggae (and Soca/Calypso) radio programs in Florida, 'Sounds of the Caribbean' on WLRN 91.3FM http://www.wlrn.org , http://www.clintoneil.com is facing the immanent cutback of its airtime. The management of the NPR affiliate reportedly claims that the show has "no listenership" on Sunday mornings from 2.00 am to 7.00 am, nor on Monday mornings from midnight to 5.00 am. As a result, the WLRN management has decided to replace "Sounds of the Caribbean" in those two slots with the BBC World News from London with the intended result of increasing listenership. The change is scheduled to take effect on Sunday October 19, 2003. "Sounds of the Caribbean" has been heard on Saturday nights/Sunday mornings on WLRN since Reggae Godfather Clint O'Neil started the show in 1979. Presently, after 24 years on the air, "Sounds of the Caribbean" is heard 7 nights a week. Over the years, the program became the show with the highest listener ratings on WLRN and has won numerous Awards as the best Reggae radio program in South Florida. The present host of the Sunday and Monday morning shows is Kevin "Ital-K" Smith, a.k.a "Englishman", who started doing the program in January 1999. Please telephone and e-mail WLRN and demand that the schedule for "Sounds of the Caribbean" remain as is, and emphasize that you will switch stations or turn off your radio if WLRN is broadcasting the BBC News over night rather than Reggae Music. Do your part if enough of us campaign to save the show we will show them who is out here listening!!
