Clinton "Basie" Fearon ". . . among the most talented and authentic in the field. Robbie Shakespeare (the best) calls Him, the best. Playing guitars, harmonizing and singing lead on many early albums has earned him the reputation as the backbone of The Gladiators (then The Defenders, now BOOGIE BROWN). His infectious bass riffs lead the way . . . a well known vocalist in his own right. Solid and authentic. What Basie does is so significant, that unlike many group members, his notoriety is worldwide." Homegrown in Jamaica and performing for over 20 years with internationally known Gladiators, you have no doubt heard CLINTON "BASIE" FEARON. His talent, experience and spiritual wisdom has earned him the respect of such reggae notables as Robbie Shakespeare, Lee "Scratch" Perry, Lloyd Daley and others, recording and playing as a studio musician at places like Jamaica's famous Studio One. Basie began his extensive musical journey in the early 70's touring and recording with The Gladiators, performing for huge crowds in Africa, Europe, North America and at Jamaica's Reggae Sunsplash. Basie has always been The Gladiators' bass man, including when they were the house band at Studio One. Basie's first two records with the group were Freedom Train and Rockaman Soul--albums on Lloyd Daley's Matador label, both of which reached the Top Ten in the Jamaican charts. Jamaica's top producer, Coxsone Dodd, at Studio One, also produced The Gladiators with Basie writing and singing on the Step Right Back album and others. In 1974 at Black Arts Studio, with Lee "Scratch" Perry producing and Gladiator's producer Prince Tony Robinson insisting he sing lead, Basie again wrote and/or sang lead on many selections including Can You Imagine How I Feel, Stop Before You Go, and Marvel Not--all on the Proverbial Reggae album. Other songs to his credit include Get Read, Let Jah Be Praised, Backyard Meditation and Merrily--on the Naturality and Sweet So Till albums. Basie then came to Seattle, Washington, where he performed for many years with The Defenders--formerly The Gladiators. In 1989, Basie wrote and sang lead on The Defender's album, Chant Down Babylon/Rock Your Bones which reached #14 on the national The Reggae Route Top 20 (CMJ New Music Report, April 21, 1989), as well as other radio and magazine charts around the country. Basie also released Feel The Spirit which sold out on the first run in less than one month. The music on Feel The Spirit is "playful and danceable, but with a sense of reality and awareness." Clinton "Basie" Fearon continues to mesmerize the crowds at present with "The Boogie Brown Band." Their DISTURB THE DEVIL CD is unforgettable. Joyful, playful, conscious, moving. It is the music that makes you rise and grove to life. Connected. Warm. Music you will not forget. DISTURB THE DEVIL . . . with life, rhythm and song. Basie's finest!
